When you are faced with incoming information from the world around you, your brain has to quickly assess it for threats to your survival. If you have survived trauma, your brain uses the information it has stored about that trauma and quickly and unconsciously assesses the incoming information for resemblances. It takes a better safe than sorry approach. Sometimes harmless situations are deemed to be threats and we react defensively.
